On a high hill overlooking the Mediterranean some 30 miles south of Beirut lies the pilgrimage town of Maghdouche, famous for its 90-foot (30-meter) bronze Maronite shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Nestled on a hilltop overlooking saida, Maghdouche is the largest and most important christian town in the Zahrani region. With a population of about 8,000 people, the town enjoys a vibrant nightlife with plenty of cafes and restuarants around its main street. The town dates back to several hundred years ago. The most prominent historical event that we can associate this town's history with is when Jesus and the Virgin Mary visited the town on their way to preach in saidMaghdouche-Liban-Sud-Lebanona. Legend says that the virgin mary waited for her son in a small cave on the tip of the hill while he went to preach.

Today a shrine rises over the site where supposedly the incident took place. The shrine is called "Our lady of the Mantara" (mantara means waiting); it is consisted of a marian tower (just like the one in harrisa) and behind it a large basilica (still U/C). The basilica, appointed for the Greek Melkite Catholic sect, is the third largest church in the Middle East, after the Annunciation church in Nazareth and the Our Lady of Lebanon Basilica. The shrine is one of the holliest and most religously significant sites in lebanon.
